Getting into shape is always a good idea, but it can be challenging to find the motivation to put down the chips and hit the gym – especially if you’re dating someone who isn’t as interested in your new fitness kick as you are. Instead of creating potential tension over conflicting interests and changing habits, consider getting your significant other on board! Getting fit as a couple is way more fun than sweating it alone, and you’ll both reap the benefits of your newfound focus on health.
If you’re looking to burn some calories and slim up with your significant other, here are a few fun ways the two of you can get fit together:
Register for a fun run
Running is a great way to get into shape – you’ll burn calories, work your lungs, and build lots of lean muscle – but it isn’t always the most exciting form of exercise. However, you can make it fun by signing up for a silly 5k, Tough Mudder, or another race to work toward. From well-known races that rotate through cities (like the Color Run) to locally-grown events and races, you’re sure to find a handful of options in your area.
Sign up for a fitness class
From cardio kickboxing and specialized martial arts programs to Zumba and aerobics, there are dozens of different types of fitness classes you can sign up for. Most local gyms offer a handful of classes for members, but you might need to seek out a specialized facility if you’re looking for something a little more niche. Whatever you choose, you’ll be motivated to show up – and keep up with the rest of the group – as you learn something new.
Enroll in a new gym together
Signing up for a gym can be intimidating, especially if you aren’t sure what the heck you’re doing! However, joining a gym together can give you both the encouragement and motivation you need to show up and work out, and as a bonus, you’ll have a partner there to spot you and make sure you’re moving through each exercise properly. You may be surprised by just how much fun you have building muscle with workout machines, free weights and accessories like resistance bands and kettlebells.
Take it outside!
Fitness doesn’t have to happen in the gym. Instead, burn some calories and have some fun together out in the open. From hiking and mountain biking to canoeing and kickball, there are endless ways to get your heart pumping outdoors that are a ton of fun. Whether you’re adrenaline junkies who would prefer to scale mountains or you’re happier when power-walking through your local park, you’ll have fun when you get fit outside.
Join a team
If the idea of making new friends while getting into shape sounds like a good time, see if you can sign up for a local sports team! Many cities offer recreational leagues well-suited for beginners. Kickball and softball are two popular options you’ll likely find in your area, but you may find flag football and other sports available through rec leagues, too.
From hitting the track to bouncing in a fitness class, you’ll surely have more fun working out when you’re working out as a couple. What’s your favorite way to get active and burn some calories with your significant other? Leave a comment and let me know!
