Name: Kenley 10k
Where: Kenley Aerodrome, Surrey
Distance: You guessed it – 10K
Organiser: MCC Promotions
My Time: 50:58 – New P.B
Before I do the usual.. blah blah this is how it was, you need a bit of backstory for this run!
The night before we decided to go out (not a regular habit I make for events but it was a special occasion!) and we had a fab night out at an “Around the world” themed fancy dress birthday party – we went as Hawaii (Happy Birthday Nic!!). I wasn’t going to drink (haha) ok so I was only going to have a couple, but… that didn’t happen, I had far too much, which made for a great evening!!! here we are merrily enjoying our night out!
The downside is… this is what a late night of drinking does to a person when they have to get up at 6:30am for a running event – I could not handle living at that moment and I did not feel well!
So if I am honest it started off on the wrong foot! and then things got worse….
It was cold – I mean really cold and very windy, the aerodrome is very open to the elements and mother nature was not playing ball (at all)- it also started raining a little halfway through (yay 0_0)
There also weren’t as many people as last year (I did it last year too!) which was a bit disappointing, especially since we had made the effort :p (some people are just too clever to come out in the freezing weather to run first thing on a Sunday morning – how dare they!)
It wasn’t all bad though…
Somehow against all of the odds (mostly wine!) I managed to get a P.B and it really did make it all worth it! I really struggled with the run and my legs were very tired (dehydration from the wine) so I really dug deep for this one and I was rewarded!
Dad did a P.B too and now he’s catching me up (must train harder) but he wasn’t thrilled about the weather! We did get race bling though, so that is always a plus for the hard work! :p
The Kenley 10k was well organised and thank you to the volunteers and supporters who stood and cheered regardless of the weather!! (hats off to you freezing souls!) and one of the other main highlights (for me) was the course itself, although not very scenic, it is beautifully flat! and with it being laps I love to be able to chill out and not really pay attention to what’s going on around me (something I couldn’t do in the Valentine’s Day 10k a couple of weeks ago)
Although I wouldn’t advocate for heavy drinking and lack of sleep the night before an event, I was pleasantly surprised and ecstatic that I managed to get a P.B regardless!
I said in my Valentine’s Day 10k recap that my new target would be sub 50 mins. I didn’t reach that this time but I did get the P.B and I am very happy so hopefully I can aim to get under the 50 minutes next time!
