When you have a pet at home you often struggle with nasty stains and odours. Even if your cats or dogs demonstrate good habits, at times they simply want to make menaces and to leave “pleasant” surprises on your favourite carpet.

Nowadays there are hundreds of commercial cleaners that can handle the stains and odours, however, if you are searching for a cost effective and homemade solution, you’ve come to the right place.

Removing pet stains and unpleasant smells can be child’s play, as long as you know how to make your own carpet cleaner. Be creative and forget about all the commercial products that often fail to be efficient or manage all types of stains.

Explore some new ways in which to make your home more welcoming place in a few simple steps. Pet owners know that they should take special care when cleaning the house because their lovely dogs or cats can always surprise them with a stain or with a nasty odour.

Now you do not need to bother about the condition of your carpet – just consider the following tips:

White Vinegar & Water

You may have heard that white vinegar has impressive properties when it comes to cleaning and the same goes for carpet cleaning. To get rid of the pet stains you need to mix fifty per cent of white vinegar and fifty per cent of water. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and apply to the affected areas of the carpet. Use a soft brush so that the mixture could easily penetrate the surface of the carpet. Take a paper towel and place it on to the surface of the carpet to absorb the solution. The stains will disappear quickly because the white vinegar neutralizes the ammonia in the urine.

Baking Soda Spray

In case you want to get rid of the nasty odours quickly, here is one great recipe that is inexpensive and easily prepared.

You Will Need:

  • White distilled vinegar
  • 4 tablespoons of baking soda
  • a cup of lukewarm water

The white vinegar will deal with the urine stains while the baking soda will effectively remove the unpleasant odours. You can use a spray bottle to apply the solution on to the carpet, or if your prefer you can also use a bowl to place the mixture directly.

Hydrogen  Peroxide Recipe

Hydrogen peroxide is excellent ingredient for DIY carpet cleaning and when it is combined with baking soda it does miracles with stains and odours.

You Will Need:

  • One cup of baking soda
  • ½ cup of hydrogen peroxide
  • a bowl and a teaspoon of dish liquid

The first thing to do is sprinkle the stains with some baking soda. Then, mix the hydrogen peroxide and the dish liquid and place the solution on the stain. Use a cloth to scrub the solution so that it can penetrates into the carpet fibres and leave it that way for up to 15 minutes.

Make your home atmosphere more welcoming by removing the pet stains and odours from your lovely carpets. Using the tips mentioned above will save you lots of money that you would have otherwise spent on commercial cleaners.

  1. Some great tips from Edna, Charlotte. Water and white vinegar has been a favourite of mine for quite some time. I didn’t know about adding it to clothes in the washing machine to remove nasty niffs – I will definitely try that in future.

  2. My aunt from Brussels contacted me as her cat had made a mess on her carpet.
As long as it is not Sisal carpet you can use home made remedies.

    My advice was to
    get clean towels,
    put some gloves
place the towels on the area in question

Press down and try to remove as much moisture as possible.
Once this is done apply a spray of white wine vinegar and water being equal quantities. The acid will help neutralise the odour. Again dab with the towels. What ever you do , DO NOT RUB THE LIQUID, ALWAYS PRESS AND DAB. you don not want to spread the liquid.

Once happy that you have removed the odour and liquid, pour salt on the area and leave overnight. The salt will help draw out any remaining moisture.

Repeat until you can not smell any pee.

  3. This is a really helpful post Charlotte, Edna clearly knows her stuff. Love all the little tricks on here, sure to come in useful, thanks for the post 🙂

  4. Hello Charlotte, I am quite experienced in house cleaning as a whole and know some very good and effective recipes. However, I had never heard of Hydrogen Peroxide Recipe that you mention in the post here. I have some stains on my carpet that I unsuccessfully cleaned with some of my methods, so for sure will try that :). Thanks for the great advice, I love it!

  5. Hydrogen peroxide with baking soda and dishsoap is an excellent cleaner for removing skunk sprays and skunk smell from pets.

  6. I think these are some great recipes to have on hand if you have pets! As a dog owner, I’ll definitely be remembering this article next time my dog has an accident. My only concern is whether using wash cloths to wipe up the messes will be enough to clean deep into the carpet. I’m sure that using only a cloth would be fine for new messes, but wouldn’t you need a vacuum or carpet cleaner to get deep-set stains? Either way, thanks for the suggestions.

  7. I love using baking soda for my homemade cleaners! It’s nice to have a new recipe on hand for sure. Thanks so much for sharing!

  8. Excellent timing – Henry is getting older, has worn out kidneys and HATES going outside to do his business but we cannot have a litter tray indoors …. he has a tray in the porch but still sometimes refuses to go out there and we get the odd accident. A very useful post to add to #AnimalTales – thank you.

  9. Great advice, thank you! We don’t have cats (or dogs), but little boys do sometimes wee where they shouldn’t, so this could come in handy for those areas too. Thanks for linking up to #howtosunday 🙂 x

  10. Nothing is quite as pervasive as cat pee! Vinegar is great to throw in the washing machine too if the cat decides the laundry basket is a suitable spot to go.

    • I couldn’t agree with you further, Stella. Vinegar is brilliant for removing the odor of cat urine as I’ve also used it in the past for doing exactly that but also for a variety of other foul odours in my friends’ and family’s homes!

  11. Great tipa – we have a cat who scratches a lot and have tried using vinegar as a spray to discourage him – it seems to have helped! We have also used it in the dog when she rolls in fox poo and it seems to help with that too!!
